Now I know what your thinking…sounds easy but temptation gets in the way. We have all been down that road many times. Your traveling on the road and you stop for gas and find yourself going into the food court area. You just went in to use the restroom but then you smell cinnamon buns or you see someone eating a creamy ice cream cone. Cravings kick in don’t they?
Traveling is stressful on its own and staying healthy may not be your first priority. Here are my top five tips that I use to help me stay 99% healthy while I am traveling. Of course you know a slice of cake or specialty truffle will come into play for that 1%.
Planning Ahead For The Trip: If I know that I can at least make one meal to go, I do it. Not only does it save you money, but you’re also staying on track. Remember, a lunch box is your best friend when you travel. I like packing some sandwiches for the road made of whole grain bread with lean protein and veggies for lunch. I also like to bring oatmeal in pre-portioned ziplock bags, Larabars and fresh fruit for breakfast while at my destination.
Pack Snacks: Traveling always makes me hungry, which is why I like to have healthy snacks on hand. Good ideas are fruits, nuts, Kashi cereal bars, Larabars and so forth. If you have to stop somewhere for a snack, nice options are string cheese, fruit cups, yogurt, cut up veggies, and of course nuts. For a sweet tooth, grab that dark chocolate!
Get In Your Greens and Veggies: I like to pack as many of my meals in advanced as I can for my trips. If I am lucky, I buy food from a nearby supermarket because I have a fridge handy. If both aren’t possible, it is almost never impossible to get a salad. Make sure to stay clear from fatty salad dressings. Along with your greens and veggies, don’t forget some whole grains, fruits, lean protein, healthy fats, etc.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential. Wherever your travels may take you, it is important to get in all your water, especially when faced with temptation. Your body can make you think that you are hungry when really you just need some of that H2O.
No One is Perfect: All you have to do is simply try your best to stay on track but most importantly, enjoy yourself! Whether you are on vacation or visiting family, make sure to relax and release some tension. Don’t beat yourself up if you mess up at a meal, just start over at the next one. It is never too late!
